Groups with countably many subgroups

We describe soluble groups in which the set of all subgroups is countable and show that locally (soluble-byfinite) groups with this property are soluble-by-finite. Further, we construct a nilpotent group with uncountably many subgroups in which the set of all abelian subgroups is countable.

Schrödinger Operators with Many Bound States

Consider the Schrödinger operators H± = −d/dx ± V (x). We present a method for estimating the potential in terms of the negative eigenvalues of these operators. Among the applications are inverse Lieb-Thirring inequalities and several sharp results concerning the spectral properties of H±.

Dominating countably many forecasts

We investigate differences between a simple Dominance Principle applied to sums of fair prices for variables and dominance applied to sums of forecasts for variables scored by proper scoring rules. In particular, we consider differences when fair prices and forecasts correspond to finitely additive expectations and dominance is applied with infinitely many prices and/or forecasts. 1. Introducti...

P Points with Countably Many Constellations

If the continuum hypothesis (CH) is true, then for any P point ultrafilter D (on the set of natural numbers) there exist initial segments of the Rudin-Keisler ordering, restricted to (isomorphism classes of) P points which lie above D, of order type N,. In particular, if D is an RK-minimal ultrafilter, then we have (CH) that there exist P-points with countably many constellations. 0. Introducti...

Number of Bound States of Schrödinger Operators with Matrix-valued Potentials

We consider the Schrödinger operator −∆ − V (x) on R, but with the difference from the usual case that V is a Hermitian matrix-valued potential. In other words, the Hilbert space is not L(R) but L(R;C). The values of functions in this space, ψ(x), are N−dimensional vectors. (What we say here easily generalizes to ‘operatorvalued’ potentials, i.e., C is replaced by a Hilbert space such as L(R), ...
